Forrest Griffin Finally Honored with Induction into the International Sports Hall of Fame

The International Sports Hall of Fame will welcome a prestigious lineup in its 15th class, headlined by none other than UFC legend Forrest Griffin. Initially slated for induction in 2020, Griffin’s ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19 travel restrictions that barred UFC personnel from attending. Now, he’ll finally receive recognition for his remarkable contributions to the sport, a moment ISHOF Vice President Fairfax Hackley deems not just overdue, but well-deserved.

Hackley expressed, “At the time of Forrest’s original induction, he was unable to travel due to the UFC's travel ban related to COVID. We had ‘unfinished business,’ and he deserved every part of a full induction.”

A Look Back at Griffin’s Influential Career

Forrest Griffin’s legacy in the octagon transcends mere statistics; it embodies grit, resilience, and a fighter’s mindset. He once recounted feeling more at ease inside the cage than in everyday social situations. "I wanted to be a professional fighter, full stop," he stated, a sentiment that arguably drove his ambitious career forward.

With a striking record of 19 wins against seven losses, Griffin's accolades are impressive. He was the inaugural light-heavyweight champion of "The Ultimate Fighter," a former UFC champion, and, of course, a UFC Hall of Famer. Reflecting on pivotal moments, he often cites his historic fight against Stephan Bonnar in the 2005 finale of "The Ultimate Fighter" as a career-defining moment that propelled both athletes into stardom and revitalized the UFC.

Throughout his career, Griffin battled legendary fighters such as Rashad Evans, Tito Ortiz, Anderson Silva, and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, whom he defeated for the title. His induction into the UFC Hall of Fame alongside Bonnar was a fitting recognition; however, Griffin harbored aspirations for a more extended career, longing for the second chapter of success similar to that of Randy Couture or Brandon Vera.

Griffin’s Ongoing Influence on MMA

Transitioning from the spotlight of competition, Griffin now serves as the UFC's Vice President of Athlete Development, a role he has embraced for over a decade. His focus lies in mentoring fighters, equipping them with knowledge on training, load management, recovery, and weight control without resorting to unsafe practices. His advocacy for athlete welfare aims to reshape the sport, in line with the evolving needs of MMA professionals.

"They wanted fighters to be more resilient, extend careers, fight more often if they wanted; they wanted professionals," Griffin noted, emphasizing the holistic approach favored in modern athlete management.

Griffin is also taking time to inspire the next generation of athletes through public speaking engagements, imparting lessons learned from various pursuits, including rock climbing. His advice resonates broadly: “Don’t look up and don’t look down. Always look straight ahead.” This philosophy will likely echo during his induction speech at the ISHOF.

Joining Griffin in the Class of 2026 will be notable names such as Dexter Jackson, Garry Kasparov, and the Harlem Globetrotters, further emphasizing the high caliber of this year’s inductees. With his induction, Griffin will join an elite group of MMA icons like Randy Couture, Royce Gracie, Frank Shamrock, Ronda Rousey, and Stipe Miocic.

Griffin remains humble, appreciating each recognition of his contributions to the sport. "Any time that your work is recognized, that’s something. It’s an honor to be among those people," he remarked.

The 2026 ISHOF induction ceremony is scheduled for September 26 at the Palms Casino and Resort Grand Ballroom in Las Vegas, beginning at 12:30 PM Pacific Time. For more details about the Hall of Fame, visit the official website.
