From Firefighter to Fitness Entrepreneur: Matt Gehlbach's Journey to Empower Dads

Matt Gehlbach's journey exemplifies resilience and purpose in the fitness industry. Coming from a challenging background, he blends sports passion and life lessons to inspire men everywhere. When asked about his motivation, his response is insightful: "You'll never know until you try, right?"

Roots in Bay Area Athleticism

Growing up in the Bay Area, Gehlbach was introduced to sports by his grandfather, celebrating local teams like the 49ers and Giants. His childhood saw him gravitating towards baseball, sparking an enduring interest in fitness and weight training. Despite a genuine passion for training, he struggled to find a consistent nutritional plan tailored to his needs.

"I tried finding something that could stick, but it proved really difficult. I kept experimenting with varied diets," he recalls, noting a notable struggle with fads.

His interest in club rugby blossomed during college but an old knee injury from baseball sidelined his ambitions. This setback redirected his path towards the fire service, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in health and wellness.

Gehlbach states, "It wasn’t until I began my journey in the fire service that I recognized my health is my own responsibility. No one is coming to save me.”

A Path to Bodybuilding Success

Fascinated by fitness publications and platforms, Gehlbach sought knowledge from various major resources, including magazines like Muscle & Fitness. This immersion in the fitness world led a friend to encourage him to compete in bodybuilding—a suggestion that sparked his competitive spirit.

"I hired a coach, signed up for a show, and just started prepping. I ended up winning three out of four categories," he shares, reflecting on his unexpected success.

After taking a role with an ambulance service in Austin, Texas, Gehlbach faced personal tragedy with his father’s sudden passing, prompting him to return home. When he eventually joined a fire department, he admits suboptimal physical fitness cost him dearly, resulting in his dismissal during a critical phase of training. Yet, he perceives this experience positively, recognizing it as a pivotal wake-up call.

"I say to this day it was the best thing that ever happened to me—it was such a wake-up call," he notes with clarity.

Utilizing the lesson from this setback, Gehlbach then hired a coach and dedicated himself to losing 30 pounds and enhancing his fitness. His dedication ultimately paid off when he successfully joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2018, achieving what became a significant milestone in his career.

Embracing Entrepreneurship

Driven by a desire to make a broader impact, Gehlbach envisioned helping other men reclaim their fitness through his T.R.O.P.H.Y. system, ultimately culminating in the launch of the Trophy Dad brand. This initiative has since empowered numerous dads to achieve their fitness aspirations without the burdens he once faced.

Additionally, Gehlbach created his preworkout supplement, Morning Would.

Gehlbach made the decisive choice to leave the fire service in April 2026, fully committing to his entrepreneurial endeavors—a move he describes as "all gas, no brakes." This leap has already borne fruit.

A new partnership with HeroWorks and the inspirational "I Believe in You" campaign is set to take Gehlbach to the esteemed Olympia World Fitness Expo in Las Vegas this September 25 and 26, where he anticipates connecting with like-minded fitness enthusiasts and introducing a new flavor of Morning Would.

For someone who once struggled with self-image, participating in the Olympia Weekend signifies a dream realized. Now, as a dedicated husband and father, he aims to share a message of hope and motivation, empowering other fathers to pursue their dreams.

"Envision, dream big. Be obsessive about what you want for your life and who you are," Gehlbach encourages, offering a guiding mantra to aspiring fitness enthusiasts.
