Dolph Lundgren shares his journey beating cancer and maintaining fitness at 68, encouraging others with his new book, "Fights Worth Fighting."

Dolph Lundgren, standing at an impressive 6'5", became a household name playing Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and embodying He-Man in Masters of the Universe. Yet, his latest challenge transcends Hollywood action roles. After grappling with a serious cancer diagnosis, Lundgren has released his autobiography, Fights Worth Fighting: Finding Strength in Struggle, to inspire others to prioritize their health amid adversity.
It might come as a surprise that Lundgren is not just another action star. A former ice hockey player, he holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering and was a Fulbright scholar before diving into the film industry. His breakout role in Rocky IV launched a prolific career with over a hundred film credits, yet nothing prepared him for the emotional turmoil that followed his cancer diagnosis. Faced with his mortality, Lundgren transformed his battle into a personal journey, prompting him to reflect on his life while promoting resilience through his experiences.
As he embarks on a book tour and prepares for an upcoming documentary, Lundgren describes writing as a therapeutic endeavor—"It’s a bit like doing therapy," he comments. The process has allowed him to revisit his past adventures, acknowledge the young man who left Sweden, and reconnect with his sense of purpose. Importantly, his book serves not only as a memoir but as a beacon of hope for anyone fighting their own battles, whether they be health-related or personal hardships.
Dolph Lundgren's Cancer Journey
Lundgren’s struggle with cancer began with a disturbing symptom: blood in his urine, noticed after a training session in 2015. A subsequent diagnosis revealed a tumor on his kidney, which required surgical removal. Though initially hopeful, his optimism was tested in 2020 when doctors discovered additional tumors nearby. These, too, were surgically removed, but Lundgren later faced an even graver challenge with a malignant liver tumor that resisted surgery due to its size.
What followed was a relentless regimen of chemotherapy, targeting his kidney tumors but accompanied by troubling side effects like blood clots. At one point, doctors advised him to spend quality time with loved ones, suggesting that he might not have much longer. Nonetheless, Lundgren's fighting spirit would not allow him to surrender. Instead, he immersed himself in his film projects while seeking alternative medical opinions.
A turning point came during his consultations at UCLA Health, where Dr. Alexandra Drakaki identified a mutation linked to lung cancer. This clinical breakthrough enabled a tailored treatment plan that dramatically reduced his tumors by roughly 90%. Ultimately, he underwent ablation, a procedure that employs heat or cold to destroy residual cancerous tissues, leading to significant recovery.
Staying Fit and Motivated at 68
With a newfound zest for life, Lundgren, who now proudly stands cancer-free, remains a testament to resilience at the age of 68. His book, rich with reflections on fitness, life challenges, and personal achievements—including his black belt status—is also a guide on maintaining health as one ages. Lundgren emphasizes the importance of retaining muscle mass and testosterone levels as vital components of overall well-being.
He continues to train vigorously, fitting in sessions three times a week that balance strength training with karate practice. For Lundgren, this regime isn’t merely physical; it addressed the aftermath of his intense medical treatments, which took a toll on his body. "Just 30 minutes of sweating it out can lead to significant results for body and mind,” he notes, highlighting the holistic benefits of regular exercise.
Beyond his cinematic legacy, Lundgren serves as a role model for those seeking motivation and positivity in difficult times. Reflecting on an alternate career path, he muses that, had he pursued a different vocation, he might have become a karate coach or a chemical engineering professor—roles that "would have been frustrating for me." His creative inclinations, coupled with boundless energy, confirmed his choice to pursue acting was indeed the right move.
Continuing to inspire, Lundgren encourages others to confront their own battles and reminds them that every struggle can lead to strength. His journey and insights, documented in Fights Worth Fighting, resonate deeply with anyone facing adversity.
